UK: Big protest march against Liberalisation in Bournemouth

Delegates attending the Communication Workers Union (CWU) Annual Conference in Bournemouth took part in a protest march through the town centre to demonstrate against postal liberalisation on Wednesday 6 June.

1000 CWU postal delegates took part in the rally, however this number would have been higher but the participation was restricted by Police for safety reasons.

Those on the march chanted “Royal Mail Not For Sale” and even booed when they passed a WH Smiths store, which is one of the companies who are taking Post Office Counters into their stores and closing the crown post offices.

Speeches were made to the participants and heard by the public in the middle of Bournemouth town centre and a special solidarity message from Rolf Buettner, UNI Postal World President was read out.

UNI’s Colin Medland took part in the march which gained a high profile with the public throughout Bournemouth with many members of the public asking questions.

This March was just one of many actions taken across Europe as the fight against liberalisation increases.

There were also calls for Alan Leighton and Adam Crozier to resign as the Postal delegates just finished a ballot for industrial action, the result will be announced on 7th June. The workers in Royal Mail have clearly had enough and it is expected to be a “Yes” vote for strike action.

The CWU Conference continues and a press conference announcing the ballot result takes place at the conference today (7 June) at 11.45am.

UNI Europa meets MEP Marcus Ferber on European Postal Liberalisation

A delegation from UNI Europa : Regional Secretary, Bernadette Segol, Rolf Büttner
and John Pedersen, both UNI Europa Post & Logistics met with MEP, Marcus Ferber,
PPE, who is the rapporteur on the Commission's proposal for a new EU postal directive
in the European Parliament's Transport Committee (TRAN), which is the key Committee
to put amendment proposals for voting in the European Parliament.

Mr. Ferber is very much in favour for a full market opening of European Postal Services as
proposed by the Commission as of 1.1.2009, but he realises that with the growing opposition
to the proposal, which include opposition from 4 other Parliamentary Committees, a number
of governments and postal operators and not least UNI- Europa Post &Logistics that compromises
will have to be found.

At a meeting of the EP Tran Committee on 4 June 2007 he presented proposals to postpone the full opening to
competition of european postal markets untill the end of 2010 and for new member states and
states with special circumstances like Greece, untill 2012. The proposals contain a "reciprocity" clause saying
that companies from a country that have not fully opened its postal market cannot get access to a country that
have. Some weak amendmend proposals concerning working conditions in the postal sector is under discussion
as well.

UNI presented its position:
Prolongue the present directive untill 2012. Assess the impact of postal liberalisation and give evidence to
how to finance the postal universal service, how to create more employment and prevent precarious employment
and how citizen and society can best benefit from postal services, and then decide the future of European postal
services.

The meeting on 4 June in the EP TRAN Committee was about presenting proposals and exchange views.
After consultations within and among the groupings of the European Parliament the Committee will meet again on
18 June 2007.

El Reino Unido: Marzo de protesta grande contra Liberalisation en Bournemouth

Los delegados que asisten la Unión de Trabajadores de Comunicación (CWU) la Conferencia Anual en Bournemouth participaron en un marzo de protesta por el centro de ciudad para manifestarse contra liberalisation postal el miércoles, 6 de junio.

1000 delegados CWU postales participaron en la reunión, sin embargo este número habría sido más alto pero la participación fue restringida por la Policía para motivos de seguridad.

Aquellos durante marzo cantaron " el Correo Real No Para la Venta " y hasta abuchearon cuando ellos pasaron una tienda de Smiths WH, que es una de las empresas que toman Mostradores de Correos en sus tiendas y cierran los correos de corona.

Los discursos fueron hechos a los participantes y oídos por el público en medio del centro Bournemouth de ciudad y un mensaje de solidaridad especial de Rolf Buettner, UNI el Presidente Postal Mundial fue leído en voz alta.

Colin Medland del UNI participó en marzo que ganó un alto perfil con el público en todas partes de Bournemouth con muchos miembros del público que hace a preguntas.

Este marzo era solamente(justo) una de muchas acciones tomadas a través de Europa como la lucha contra aumentos de liberalisation.

Había también las llamadas a Alan Leighton y Adán Crozier para dimitir como los delegados Postales solamente(justo) terminaron una votación para la acción industrial, el resultado será anunciado el 7 de junio. Los trabajadores en el Correo Real claramente han tenido bastante y esperan que ello sea "Sí" el voto para la huelga.

La Conferencia CWU sigue y una rueda de prensa que anuncia el resultado de votación ocurre en la conferencia hoy (el 7 de junio) en 11.45am.
